This morning, we depart from the city of Bissau and head north towards the pier. Here, we board our boat for a day tour of the island of Baloma. As one of the closest of the 88 islands that make up the Bissagos archipelago, Baloma boasts a port and town that connect the mainland to the Bijagos Islands. Known for its mangrove forests and cashew trees, the colonial British island of Baloma served as the capital of Portuguese Guinea until 1941, when it was replaced by Bissau. We will spend the day exploring the island, its history and its natural beauty.
After an early morning departure, we set sail towards the stunning Orango Island. As we pass by the picturesque island of Baloma and other nearby islands, we anticipate reaching Orango in the early afternoon. The largest island of the archipelago, Orango boasts miles of unspoiled sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, perfect for relaxing beach walks. Bird watchers will also delight in the diverse bird life, while the nearby mangrove forest provides a sanctuary for saltwater hippos.
We set sail in the afternoon, heading towards Poilao Island. The boat ride offers a breathtaking view of dolphins swimming alongside our vessel. Poilao Island is known as Turtle Island, due to the large number of Green Sea Turtles that migrate to the island during the months of July to October each year. The island is a sanctuary for 5 different species of sea turtles, including the Green, Hawksbill, Olive, Loggerhead and Leather.
We depart early in the morning for the Island of Rubane, where we arrive in the early afternoon. After lunch, we set sail upstream past the bay of Soga, where we have the opportunity to observe a large flock of pink flamingos and other sea birds, as we embark on an afternoon voyage to the Island of Bubaque. As the largest village in the archipelago, Bubaque is accessible via a weekly ferry service. The island offers many attractions, including a small local market, the Bijagos Museum, and friendly locals frequenting small bars and restaurants. In the evening, we return to Bubaque for dinner and overnight stay. The following day, we visit the Island of Canhabaque, one of the most authentic islands in the archipelago. Also known as Roxa, Canhabaque is a part of Bubaque Island and includes a series of authentic village clusters such as Ambuduco, Bine, Maneque and more. With a land mass of 111 km², the island’s inhabitants still maintain their culture and traditions, which can be seen in their way of life, musical instruments, costumes, architecture and more. The next day, we sail back to Bubaque for an overnight stay at the Rubane Resort.
On our final day, we spend the morning relaxing on the beautiful Rubane Island. Guests have the option to go for a beach walk, take a fishing trip, or simply unwind at the resort before we depart for Bissau. We will transfer to the airport a few hours before your scheduled flight for any necessary exit formalities. As we say goodbye, we hope you have had a memorable and enjoyable trip. Tour ends.
